Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt
Through January 2, 2011
222 N. 20th Street
Perhaps the most well-known female ruler of the ages, Cleopatra was the last pharaoh of Egypt before the empire was overtaken by the Romans. During her reign, she thwarted numerous attempts to steal her throne and led her people with intelligence, beauty, cunning and charm. Though Roman conquerors tried to erase every trace of her existence, recent underwater archaeological finds reveal stunning details of her reign, her life, her love affaris with both Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony and her story. Cleopatra: The Search for the Last Queen of Egypt makes its world premiere in Philadelphia at the Franklin Institute and tells the story of one of the most popular and powerful women in history through never-before-seen artifacts and multimedia components.
Included in the exhibition are rare sculptures, ancient texts, gold jewelry and a document signed by Cleopatra, precious antiquities from expeditions by Dr. Zahi Hawass, the world's most famous Egytologist and French underwater archaeologist, Franck Goddio. The exploration teams led by these two titans of history continue to sift through the sands of time, confident they will discover more items to tell the complete story of Cleopatra.
