Your guide to Philly's diverse creative scene, nightlife, music, food & more
Last Wednesday, Laurin Talese commanded the attention of the monthly series, Sittin' In at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. An initiative of bassist Anthony Tidd, one Wednesday out of each month, music lovers come together to see a main music act as well as experience Philadelphia's finest musicians.
Kicking off the night was DJ Phsh spinning tunes both old and new and with a twist. He kept the vibe going as attendees waited to hear the styling of Talese.
Laurin Talese is an Ohio native that made her way to Philadelphia to attend the University of the Arts to study vocal performance. Fast forward to 2013, she has toured the world and also solidified a partnership with world renowned bassist and musical director Adam Blackstone. Talese will soon release an EP under the BASSic Black Entertainment moniker.
Talese was absolutely breathtaking as she took the stage in an all white dress and golden stilettos. She wasted no time jumping into song, giving a brief synopsis of her mindset while writing each song. She explained that she loves writing about the ups and downs of love that she has experienced. Talese started out with her newest release “Winter” featuring GRAMMY-nominated pianist and producer, Robert Glasper, which was written with pianist Eric Wortham.
Her Jazz set featured mostly original music of Talese's both old and new. And Talese shocked the crowd when she invited special guest Vivian Green up to do a cover of "Kissing a Fool" originally written and performed by George Michael. Green was very well received by the crowd and the chemistry of their two voices was enough to make you melt.
The band backing Talese was nothing short of all-star with Eric Wortham on piano, Anwar Marshall on drums, Wayne Moore on bass, Stephen Tirpak on trombone, Josh Lawrence on trumpet, and Ben O’ Neill as well as Anthony DeCarlo on guitar.
Following a standing ovation by the crowd, Tidd invited all the attendees to stay for the remainder of the evening where musicians would actually sit in and jam the night away.
