Your guide to Philly's diverse creative scene, nightlife, music, food & more
It’s a new year full of fresh, new content. This year, we’re digging deeper to highlight the creative geniuses behind the scenes who keep Philly’s music scene fresh and alive. So, we came up with a new video series that we think you’ll love—Masters Behind the Music (MBTM).
Don’t get us wrong—we love our artists. But, we also recognize that music wouldn’t be music without the people making moves off stage. Like the producer, who not only knows how to match a beat with an artist’s voice, but also understands the science within the production process. From a catchy hook to a bangin’ beat, good producers have mastered the skills it takes to make a song a long-running hit.
Now that we’ve sold you on the concept, let’s introduce you to our first master: Montez "Spon" Roberts. He's one producer out of Larry Gold's legendary The Studio that we've had our eyes on. From being an MC to making ridiculous beats to having incredible music philosophies, Montez has had his hands in a little bit of everything. Even if you haven’t heard his name before, we guarantee you’ve heard his hits. Do Jill Scott, The Roots, Marsha Ambrosius ring a bell? He’s worked with all of them and more. And, with Jill’s latest album The Light Of The Sun hitting #1 on the Billboard charts over the summer, his work speaks for itself.
Enough talk—check him out for yourself!
Insider tip: Stay tuned for the next feature on Masters Behind the Music. We'll be back before you know it.
