Your guide to Philly's diverse creative scene, nightlife, music, food & more
Black Music Month celebrates African-American music and honors the artists and musicians who have contributed its evolution and global impact, as well as those who continue the legacy today.
In 1979, legendary songwriter/producer and founder of Philadelphia International Records, Kenny Gamble, along with broadcast executive Ed Wright, founded the Black Music Association, which established June as Black Music Month by decree from President Jimmy Carter.
In 2000, the United States government officially recognized Black Music Month after radio personality and celebrity media coach Dyana Williams and Congressman Chaka Fattah tirelessly pushed to get the African American Music Bill passed through legislation.
We caught up with Dyana Williams, who is also fondly referred to as the “Mother of Black Music Month,” to get the inside story of how Black Music Month came to be.
Watch the video to see what she had to say.
Come to Philly in June where the foundation of Black Music Month was laid and jam with us all month long!
