10:30 pm (Nneka set)

Johnny Brenda’s

1201 N. Frankford Avenue

Get ready as two of the hottest singer- songwriters on the music scene perform for one night only in Philly.

Nigerian-born singer Nneka’s politically charged lyrics (some sung, some rapped), musical mashups – her influences range from Nina Simone to Bob Marley to Lauryn Hill – and soft, fierce voice, have thrust her into the international spotlight.  Her fourth album, Concrete Jungle, has wowed music critics from Rolling Stone, Billboard and Spin magazines, who have hailed her as an artist to watch.

Philly 360° creative ambassador and singer-songwriter-musician Nikki Jean’s pristine voice, lyricism and production have set her apart from her pop contemporaries in a major way. Her debut album, set to drop this year, features production work with industry legends Burt Bacharach, Carly Simon, Sam Hollander and more.

Thursday, August 5, 2010

8:00 pm

World Café Live

3025 Walnut Street

Raised in Philadelphia, acoustic pianist Orrin Evans was among the "Young Lions" of straight-ahead jazz who emerged in the 1990s.  Influenced by McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, among others, Evans has been employed as a sideman by Bobby Watson, Ralph Peterson, Duane Eubanks, singer Lenora Zenzalai-Helm and others.

Evans recorded his first CD as a leader, The Orrin Evans Trio, for his own Black Entertainment label in 1994. After that, he signed with Criss Cross and continued his leadership role on recordings and in live settings.  He has since founded his own label, IMANI Records and continues to be one of the leading forces in the great tradition of Philadelphia jazz.
