Your guide to Philly's diverse creative scene, nightlife, music, food & more
Just as Philly's iconic, but fictional, boxing champ Rocky Balboa makes another comeback with Broadway hit Rocky The Musical, another real-life Philadelphia boxing star prepares to defend our rep as a fighting town.
Last week, thanks to our friend DJ Casper of Darkchild, Philly 360° was granted an exclusive interview with undefeated (27-0, 16 knockouts) WBC/WBA boxing champion Danny Garcia as he prepared for his upcoming title fight against Mauricio Herrera in Puerto Rico. Garcia's fight will air live on Showtime this Saturday.
"I'm Puerto Rican, I was raised in Philadelphia, so I have the best of both worlds," Garcia said in a recent interview. "I have the Puerto Rico power and the Philadelphia toughness and Philadelphia skills."
Garcia invited us into his Frankford/Kensington multiplex which houses a neighborhood barbershop as well as his personal gym—complete with a boxing ring and a mural dedicated to his fighting victories and Latin pride.
Wearing a red sweatshirt branded with his own DSG custom logo, Garcia talked to Philly 360° about his upcoming fight, Philly's love for Rocky and what music he's rocking with these days. Danny even shouted out his favorite cheesesteak spot—it was formerly Pat's, but now Ishkabibble's on South Street gets his vote.
Check out Philly 360°'s exclusive interview with the reigning boxing champ. And remember to tune into Showtime on Saturday to watch Garcia bring home the title once more.
