Why do you live/work in Philly?
One thing I love about Philadelphia is the diversity here. Working and living in different places like New York and L.A. aren't as diverse. So in Philadelphia you feel like home, you can walk down the street and see a sister with an afro, or someone with a mohawk. From Asians to Latinos to Blacks to Indians, there’s such a huge melting pot here, so it just makes everyone feel at home. Philadelphia has a lot of hidden treasures, and once you come here, you don’t wanna leave.
What is something you wouldn't know about Philly unless you lived here?
It has a really strong sense of pride. Even when I moved here, 17 years ago, it was like once I got here, I wanted to be from Philadelphia. And now people ask me where I’m from, I just say Philadelphia. Because you have that strong sense of pride, you love being from here, you love admitting that this is a place you live, and work and have invested your life into.
How does Philly compare to other cities?
People like to sleep on Philadelphia; you really can’t sleep on Philadelphia. Once you stumble upon things in Philadelphia, it’s like everything’s underground, so you just feel like you’re part of this elite group when you stumble upon things.
How is raising a family in Philly?
Philadelphia’s the only place I could live, work and play. Being a mom of two, almost three, I had to be somewhere that was conducive for children. The schools here, the parks here, just the richness and the culture of all the museums and galleries. I just wanted my children to have something I didn’t. I grew up in a suburb of New Jersey. Not to say that I don’t love New Jersey, but I wanted my children to experience something different here. You know my daughter’s in a hip hop class, a ballet class, and she takes chess, and it’s all in the city. I don’t think a lot of people know Philly is a city with the most amounts of parks. I wanted us to have our landscape, and our landscape is the parks in Philadelphia. I always tell my children, you have a really, really big back yard, we can just travel to all of them.
What is one of Philly’s best kept secrets?
A place called Decades Vintage. If you were in New York or L.A, you’d spend $400 on one particular item. And then you can go there and she has the same thing. Her buying eye is so amazing. That’s a place I like to frequent at least twice a week just to see what she has in. It's the most amazing vintage spot in Philadelphia.
